There are many ways of reaching Mendip and exploring it when you’re there. And you don’t need a car. The information below was correct as of November 2015.
The nearest rail stations giving access to the Mendip Hills are Weston-super-Mare, Yatton, Bristol Temple Meads, Bath Spa, Frome and Castle Cary. Local bus routes into the hills are available from most of these. See the “By Bus” section below.
National Express Coach Service 403 runs from London (Victoria Coach Station) to Street and calls at Wells.
- The following local bus routes give good access to the Mendip Hills either daily or on weekdays:
126 Weston-super-Mare to Wells, via Winscombe, Axbridge and Cheddar
161 Shepton Mallet to Wells
173 Bath to Wells via Radstock, Chilcompton and Gurney Slade
174 Bath to Wells via Radstock, Oakhill, Shepton Mallet and Croscombe
376 Bristol to Wells, via Pensford, Clutton, Temple Cloud and Chewton Mendip.
- Other bus services routes are supported by local authority funding and run less frequently, but give access to more remote communities. In many case these run on only one day of the week and are set up to provide transport from villages to the larger towns, rather than outwards to the countryside. Nonetheless they can be useful when combined with an end-to-end walk.
- Details of such services serving the Chew Valley can be found at http://www.bathnes.gov.uk/publictransport/buses/timetableleaflets and http://www.n-somerset.gov.uk/transport/travel/bus_travel/pages/buses.
